The twin 12th-century towers of the ruined St.Mary's church are an imposing landmark on the 'saxon shore' coast. A stone on the ruins tells the story: 'These Towers the remains of the once venerable Church of Reculvers, were purchased of the Parish by the Corporation of Trinity House, of Deptford Strand in the Year 1810, and Groyns laid down at their expense, to protect the cliff on which the church had stood. When the ancient spires were afterwards blown down, the present substitutes were erected, to render the towers still sufficiently conspicuous to be useful to navigation.
