Kent, English Coast
Kent is known as the 'garden of England', but also boasts many miles of coastline with famous seaside towns such as Margate, Deal, Hastings and Broadstairs. From the dramatic white cliffs of Dover, the arches at Joss Bay, Kent has a lot to offer the visitor.
Kent has a long and varied coast line starting in the Thames Estuary, around the marsh areas around Faversham, the thriving fishing town of Whitstable, and the sandy beaches of the Thanet towns Margate and Broadstairs. The dramatic white cliffs begin in this area and lead around to the ferry port of Dover with it's historic 2000 year old castle and Roman lighthouse. Shingle beaches follow in Folkestone, and Napoleonic defenses are in evidence around this area of the Kent coast with the distinctive circular Deal and Walmer castles, and a number of Martello tower defences as the coast goes through Dymchurch and round to the unique Dungeness landscape and community. The sandy beaches of Camber Sands follow the Romney marshes, as the coast finally leads into East Sussex.
